I use a Smart-UPS despite the extra cost, because I wanted the power savings and other features. You can program it from the outside and not rely on their rubbish (Windows-only, last I looked) software.

I do not like APC in general because their special offers are not special, their trade-UPS are often absurd, and their replacement batteries are crazy overpriced, but their product is generally reputable. You can buy 'refurbished' APC Smart-UPS on-line at much lower prices, use mail order (in some cases with no shipping), etc. Watch out for shipping with APC, these things have lead acid batteries which are very heavy!

I have not used them but I was given a reference to www.refurbups.com by a friend who uses them himself and has been very happy with them. I have replaced APC batteries with generics at times, from reputable sources, and it seemed to do them no harm. The electronics tend not to go bad, just the batteries, and those not very often.
